The Segreant Club

The Segreant Club is the association for old members of Downing College Boat Club.

Club History

The Segreant Club was founded in 1996 as the successor club to the DCBC Old Members Association. It has grown rapidly and now has over 175 members ranging from 1930s matriculants to the most recent graduates.

The aims of the Segreant Club are:

  • To hold social events for those with an interest in Downing rowing

  • To produce a newsletter (The Magenta Messenger) to keep members informed of the Boat Club's progress

  • To financially support Downing College Boat Club

  • To allow members to row as members of the Segreant Club

The Segreant Club website launch

As a starter for ten here's a simple website to facilitate greater contact between the members of the Segreant Club community. It's powered by Blogger so it's straightforward for you to add comments or register if you want to write a post.

The key objectives of promoting better communication between the Segreants are to maintain the current momentum with high attendance of the annual dinner and generate the enthusiasm and ideas to return DCBC to the top. Many of us were Head of the River when we were members of Downing - it was a big achievement, but can we do it again now we've left?

Hurrah! Finally the ghosts of Downing's past have a home....

OK....so we need some inspired ideas for this. How about :

1. Amusing biographies of crew members in Top Trump format. Each crew member listed with strengths and weaknesses and a picture. ie :

Andy Sweeney
Segreant name : The Urchin
Strengths : Will get you round any corner at top speed.
Weaknesses : Likes to pause to smoke and likely to incur fines at every opportunity
Favourite saying : "Out of the way bitch"
Official favourite moment at DCBC : Bumping the Hall off Head 37 strokes out of Ditton.
Unofficial favourite moment at DCBC : Lovely evenings in the arms of DCWBC

Clearly input would be from both the oarsmen and peers so as to make sure that people don't big themselves up too much!

2. Can we link up a calendar feature on this so that the current DCBC Captain can mark on what they are up to and people can volunteer to coach publicly? I always find it a bit scatty as to where they are and when and am sure that a public calendar (like in Outlook) would inspire people to coach more.
